OVERVIEW
UNC Library’s Digital Collections Repository is an online archive of the Wilson Special Collection Library. This collection includes digital manuscript collections, university records, publications, and scholarly projects from university departments. Each of these collections are openly available, and users can search within each one as well as across all collections. Similar to the other archive websites I examined in preparation for this project, the vast amount of information across many different subjects means that the organizational ability of this website is crucial to its function and the experience of users.
CHALLENGE
While the provided search function and organization of the site is effective, it is often difficult to navigate and understand the contents of each section due to its current layout.
To solve this, I explored the HMW statement, "How might we adjust the experience of the website to make it easier for users to navigate?"
SOLUTION
In my redesign prototype, I aimed to create a clearer home page and alter the search interface to make it easier to use. Below is my prototype created in Figma.
EVALUATION
If I were to implement this design, I would test the effectiveness of it by offering the new design to a random selection of university staff/students who consistently use the UNC Digital Collections website. After a designated time period, I would give a survey to this group asking them to rate how effective the new design and if it improved their workflow. These ratings can be used to measure the improvement and success of the design.
Implementation of this design would require a design team, as well as approval from university/library officials. An archivist could also be consulted to ensure the preservation of archived materials through this process.
To pitch this design, I would emphasize the importance of organization for archival websites. A new organization of the site would make the information on it more accessible and effective. Although the site is usable, I would argue that despite the current functionality of the website, a confusing design may discourage users due to lack of ease of use.
